Responsible Gambling: Stay in Control
Gambling should only ever be a form of paid entertainment. These tools and warning signs help you keep it that way, and help is available if it has stopped being fun.
Five principles for safer play
- Only gamble money you can afford to lose
Treat any deposit as the cost of entertainment, like a cinema ticket. Never use money meant for rent, bills, food or debt repayments.
- Set limits before you play
Decide a money limit and a time limit for each session, and a monthly budget, before you log in.
- Never chase losses
Trying to win back what you have lost is the fastest way to lose more.
- Do not gamble when stressed, upset or after drinking
Your judgement is weaker, and it is harder to stop.
- Balance gaming with other activities
Take regular breaks, and keep time for family, work, sport and rest.
Warning signs to watch for
Answer these honestly. If several apply to you, it may be time to take a break and talk to someone:
- You spend more money or time gambling than you planned.
- You gamble to escape problems or to recover losses.
- You borrow money, sell belongings or delay bills to gamble.
- You hide your gambling from family or friends.
- You feel restless or irritable when you try to cut down.
- Gambling is affecting your sleep, work, studies or relationships.
