The House Edge Explained Simply

Every casino game is designed so that, over time, the operator keeps a share of the money wagered. Understanding that share helps you choose games and budget realistically.

House edge and RTP: two sides of one number

The house edge is the average percentage of each bet the casino expects to keep over the long run. RTP (return to player) is the rest. A slot with a 96% RTP has a 4% house edge; a European roulette bet with a 2.70% edge has an RTP of 97.3%.

Estimating the average cost of playing

A simple formula gives the average expected cost of a session:

Average cost = bet size × number of bets × house edge

Illustrative average cost of different sessions
Game (example edge)BetBets per sessionAverage cost
Slot (4%)RM1500 spinsRM20
European roulette (2.70%)RM560 spinsabout RM8.10
Baccarat Banker (about 1.06%)RM1080 handsabout RM8.50

This is an average over many sessions. Any single session can end well above or below it, which is what makes gambling exciting, and risky.

Why game speed matters

Notice that the number of bets is part of the formula. A fast game with a small edge can cost more per hour than a slow game with a bigger edge. That is why quick games such as crash games or Dragon Tiger need firm time limits.

Why betting systems cannot beat it

Every individual bet carries the edge. Changing how much you bet, or when, only rearranges the bets; it does not change the edge on any of them. Systems that raise stakes after a loss can produce many small wins followed by one large loss that wipes them out.

House edge vs volatility

The edge tells you the average cost. Volatility tells you how bumpy the ride is. Two games can share a 4% edge while one pays small wins often and the other pays rarely but big. Read about volatility in our slots guide.
